DisAbility Awareness Day
celebrates it’s 5th year!

Knowsley’s annual DisAbility Awareness Day is dedicated to the memory of John Rainey and this is the 5th year that we are celebrating the diversity and determination of Knowsley’s disabled residents, their families and the support services available in the borough.

For over 30 years John Rainey was involved in a wide range of activities that helped highlight the experiences and barriers disabled people face when trying to lead a ‘normal life’ in a society that does not recognise in many ways, the contribution of disabled people. A long term resident of Huyton, John worked for over 30 years for the Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council. 

For most of his career he worked in the Benefits Section and John was appointed as Knowsley’s first Access Officer and had the task of supporting the authority in its planning to ensure its compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.  He contributed to many projects and programmes the authority undertook in determining its compliance.

This year’s event will be held on 26th June at the King George V Leisure sports complex, Longview Lane, Huyton from 11am till 4pm.  Last year’s event attracted more than 1,000 people – this year we want to make it even bigger!

Activities on the day will include live music, dancing, a climbing wall, wheelchair basketball, face-painting and loads more!  There will also be stalls representing local agencies to promote their services (especially those for disabled people) and BSL interpreters will be available on the day too.
